Jumbo Supermarkets has signed an agreement with the consortium of Angelo Gordon / CAIRN and NEOO for a supermarket of approximately 2,000 m² in the former Beursgallery, one of the busiest locations in Rotterdam.
With this supermarket, Jumbo adds a prime city-center location to its growing portfolio of urban stores. The arrival of Jumbo marks another step forward in the successful transformation of this iconic Rotterdam building. The Beursgallery is being transformed from an inward-facing department store into “AIR,” an outward-facing mixed-use building. The new design features two floors with various retail outlets, including Jumbo, and five floors of offices (AIR Offices). Jumbo will cater not only to visitors of the central shopping district but also to the growing number of city-center residents and the many office workers in the area. The supermarket will contribute to a vibrant urban environment, active both during the day and in the evening.
The permits for the redevelopment are now final, and the interior dismantling of the former Hudson’s Bay is well underway, led by circular harvesting specialist New Horizon. Construction will begin in early October, with the shops scheduled to open in mid-2022.
