During excavation at the RottaNova construction site, an ambitious inner-city mixed-use development, remains of one of Rotterdam’s oldest structures have been uncovered. These are remarkably well-preserved sections of a medieval sluice gate, built as part of the city’s historic battle against water.

This discovery is unsurprising given RottaNova’s central location, nestled between the Markthal and Laurenskerk, in the heart of Rotterdam. This part of the city traces its origins back to 1270, the year the dam in the Rotte River was constructed—marking the birthplace of Rotterdam and its name.

In the coming months, archaeologists will continue their search for more historical treasures from Rotterdam’s past.

Once the archaeological work is complete, construction will begin after the summer of 2024, with an expected completion by the end of 2027.
