The Municipality of Rotterdam has signed a 20-year agreement with owners Angelo Gordon, CAIRN, and NEOO for an indoor public bicycle parking facility accommodating approximately 1,100 bikes in the basement of AIR, the former Hudson’s Bay building. On Thursday, September 30th, the Rotterdam City Council approved funding for the realization of the bicycle parking facility, ensuring its arrival in the heart of Rotterdam.
Alderman Bokhove (Mobility, Youth, and Language) stated: “A well-designed parking facility encourages cycling. These 1,100 new spaces in the city center are a great addition. Soon, more people will be able to bike to their favorite shops in the center and park their bikes nearby and securely. This helps keep Rotterdam residents healthy through active travel and contributes to cleaner air in the city.”
With the addition of the bicycle parking facility alongside the already contracted Jumbo supermarket, the successful transformation of this iconic Rotterdam building is one step closer to completion. The Beursgallery is being transformed from an inward-facing department store into “AIR,” an outward-facing mixed-use building. The new design includes two floors of retail, hospitality, and bicycle parking, along with five floors of offices (AIR Offices).
The permits for the redevelopment have been finalized, and the interior dismantling of the former Hudson’s Bay is well underway by circular harvesting specialist New Horizon. The bicycle parking facility is scheduled for completion in early 2023.
